Why We Avoid Synthetic Fragrances
Deciphering skincare labels can feel like an overwhelming task. Even if after you've educated yourself on ingredients to avoid, you will hit a roadblock when it comes to synthetic fragrances! If you strive to be mindful of what you're putting on your body, then taking a more in depth look at fragrances is essential.

Synthetic fragrances can be found in candles, perfumes, air fresheners, cleaning products, and the majority of skincare products. Even products that are advertised as unscented or fragrance-free may contain synthetic fragrance ingredients. It may also come as a shock that a single fragrance can be made of up to 100 chemical ingredients! Each of those ingredients do not appear on the label, but will simply read "fragrance" or "parfum," since fragrances are considered a company's trade secret. How can a consumer make informed decisions without even knowing what's in a product?

According to MadeSafe, synthetic fragrances have been linked to hormone disruption, breast cancer, allergies, and reproductive harm. It would be one thing if only a small number of products on shelves today contained fragrances, but that's unfortunately far from being the case. The vast majority of products today contain fragrances, so our exposure to them is truly extensive.

Phthalates are commonly used in creating synthetic fragrances and can also be found in toys, plastic wrap, adhesives, clothing, flooring, and the list goes on. They are considered endocrine disruptors and were listed on EWG's Dirty Dozen List. The best way to avoid them is to avoid products that list "fragrance" or "parfum" on the label.

The good news is that you can buy skincare products that smell amazing yet are free of synthetic fragrances. Essential oils are a wonderful alternative, and they are the only ingredients we use to impart aromas into our products. We believe in transparency on our labels and giving customers healthy products to choose from!
